Federer Makes History With Epic 5-Set Win

Roger Federer won a record 15th career grand slam and regained his number 1 ranking with a five set victory over Andy Roddick. It was the most amount of games played in a final in Wimbledon history as Federer won the deciding set 16-14. The first set went to Roddick when he was able to break Federer at 5-4. The second set went into a tiebreak and Roddick had four set points at 6-2. However, Federer reeled off the next six points to come from behind and take the second set. Roddick responded well in the third set and kept serving well and sent the third set into a tiebreak. Federer stepped up his game in the tiebreaker and took the third set. Once again, Roddick stayed mentally tough and broke Federer early in the fourth set and held his serve to win the fourth 6-3 and send the match into a 5th set. The deciding set was simply a serving display from both players. Roddick had two break points mid way through the fifth but Federer held him off with some big serves. They both went back and forth until Federer finally broke Roddick for the first time in the entire match to win 16-14.

This match was so well played by both players. Roddick deserved the match just as much as Federer did but once again, Roger found a way to fight through and find a way to win. Federer served a career high 50 aces. A dejected Roddick showed class and grace after match while fighting his emotions. It was a great performance from Roddick throughout the two weeks and I can only hope that he will bounce back from this and find a way to get back into the US Open final. Federer, on the other hand, has proved to us once again that he is the greatest player of all time. As Pete Sampras said after the match, "Fifteen grand slams, and counting".
